A full day private tour from Corfu to the monasteries of Meteora in mainland Greece

The Meteora is close to the town of Kalambaka, about two and a half hours from the port of Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland opposite Corfu. Meteora means "suspended in the air" and this collection of weathered rock pinnacles, believed to be about 60 million years old, has been home to monks since the 9th century. The oldest monasteries date back to the early 12th century. Over the years 20 monasteries were built, of which six remain - four occupied by men and two by women. Until the 17th century the monasteries were accessible only by ropes hauling up baskets and nets containing people and supplies, or by a series of ladders which could be pulled up during times of danger. Today they are a UNESCO World Heritage listed site and a major attraction for both pilgrims and tourists.

This full day private excursion leaves from Corfu. You will be collected from your holiday accommodation in the morning and transferred to the port for the one hour ferry crossing to Igoumenitsa. From there your air conditioned transport will take you to Kalambaka where you will visit two of the monasteries - Great Meteoron and Varlaam - accompanied by a professional guide. You will return to Corfu in the evening. There will be stops for refreshments on the way as well as a chance to have lunch in Kalambaka.

The price of this excursion includes all transport including transfers and ferry, a professional guide and entry to the monasteries. It does not include any meals or refreshments. (Please bear in mind that these are holy places and dress accordingly.)
